Does God Speak Today?

Edited on Saturday, August 27th 2011

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Hebrews 1:1-4

Progressive Relevation
"but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son" God speaks through His Son and we know what Jesus said by reading the Bible. We get no new revelation other than what is written in the Bible. Adding to the Bible, such as by a feeling or an experience, is a lie. We have no other revelation except by scripture alone.
If you or another believer is saying that they heard God speak to them, they are lying and immature in spirit. Even though they think that God speaks to them of reason by experience, this does not mean it's true. Just because they might have had a dream that God spoke to them and they experienced it for themselves does not make it true. This is claiming a prophecy. That is heresy. If it doesn't line up with scripture then it's not true.
God has visited people in a dream in the Old and the New Testament, often as an angel. He delivered to them a prophecy. Prophecies were made in order for God's plan of salvation to work out. And just because it is mentioned in the OT doesn't make it true for believers today. Those were chosen people by God whom which He used in order to accomplish His plan for the future salvation of the world in Jesus Christ. There is no indication by God in scripture by which we are told that He will give us new revelation or answers to our prayers by speaking to us audibly. And Acts 2:17 is not an exception.
Revelation 22:18 says "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book." If you say that you heard God speak to you then you are fooled. You only hear your own voice. You don't ask God for an understanding of a topic and expect Him to give you an answer. That is going beyond the words of scripture. That is adding to God's sufficient word. All of the answers are in scripture alone. There is no outside source needed.

In the Old Testament God did speak in a whisper, but that doesn't mean that he speaks to you in a whisper. There is a mention in the New Testament of the God speaking as if in a murmur. We all know a murmur is an unclear speech quietly spoken. Some have said that they hear a whisper of a Bible verse in their mind. That I can deal with. But when someone says that they heard God speak to them as if God was giving them a clear answer to a prayer or a new revelation or prophecy, then that I cannot agree with. Scripture is clear on that.

God doesn't need to speak today. His word should be sufficient for the believer. The Canon is closed.

False Dream
Dreams are usually conjured up from memory and also something that has been on your mind. When you dream it is said that your mind is working unconsciously. Also, dreams can be influenced by many aspects. Sometimes we become self-aware in our dreams. It has happened to me numerous times. I have come aware that I was dreaming and then I change the scenario of the dream such as imagining my favourite car and then it appears. Dreams don't have to be taken seriously. They can be disturbing after watching a horror movie. You might also have a reoccurring dream after a traumatic experience.
When a person wants to believe something they may very well have a dream that tells them what they want. Then they begin to believe in their dream, considering it a spiritual revelation. This seems to be the basis for false dreams and false prophesy. For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye caused to be dreamed. For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd. If you study dreams from a Christian perspective I believe God will give you understanding of the interpretation, and also wisdom to tell which category a dream falls under.

Always line it up with scripture.

A Mormon asks, "Do you really believe that god has finished speaking to us, that the Bible is all there is now? So if he talked to the people then, why wouldn't he do it now? "

In Luke 16:16 is says that there are no new prophets today.
"The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it."

In Hebrews 1:1-3 that now He speaks to use through Jesus, not prophets.
"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,"
