Cynicism in Arguments

Ravi Zacharias wrote in his book Can Man Live Without God,
"Skepticism and cynicism have suddenly become the hallmarks of sophistication, and the knowledge of who we are has been left to the domain of the uneducated or unscientific (since they are the only ones naive enough to believe that truth is absolute)."
Do you know what an Ad Hominem is?
There are different kinds of logical fallacies that people make in presenting their positions. An Ad Hominem is when an individual attacks the person instead of the argument to hide the truth. This is important to know so that you can expose the error in their logic and yours. Four examples are:
  1. "You are so stupid your argument couldn't possibly be true."
  2. "I figured that you couldn't possibly get it right, so I ignored your comment."
  3. "You creationists have your head in the sand. Why don't you go read a biology book!"
  4. "Have you even read the Bible?"

Matt Slick wrote,
"Given that the atheist has a presuppositional base that there is no God, in order for him to accept a proof for God's existence, he would have to change his presuppositional base. This is not easy to do, and would involve a major paradigm shift in the belief structure of the atheist. Therefore, an atheist is presuppositionally hostile to any proofs for God's existence, and is less likely to be objective about such attempted proofs."
This is another reason why atheists can be so cynical in arguments.

The truth is the belief in the supernatural claims of the Bible is the stumbling block.

  1. I stumbled across your blog today, and I must say, I enjoy reading your thoughts. A friendly correction: you listed four, not three examples. Not sure if that was meant to be on purpose or not.
